Arch top guitars represent the highest level of accomplishment for the luthier. Not only are there the usual guitar making skills necessary like neck making, fretting, side bending, and the like, there are highly specialized areas unique to arch tops. These are areas in which we have much pride. What we are talking about is carving the plates: taking a solid billet of wood and sculpting it into a beautiful dish capable of producing music. We use a combination of power and hand tools to create a top. A carving machine gets us about 70% there and eliminates a lot of the pure drudgery. The last 30% is accomplished by hand and is all hand plane and scraper work
Then, hand split braces are meticulously designed, installed and carved . After the body is assembled, the guitar is voiced. This is where it all comes together. The top and back get thinned, shaped, and sculpted mostly around the perimeter until the sought after sound is there.
We have two basic models of archop guitar. The Rose City, and the Bridgetown. Each is a masterwork that you would be proud to own. The Bridgetown is 17" and has much embellishment as far as bindings trim and pearl. It kind of an homage to some of the art deco beauties that were made in the past. The Rose city is a16" and is equally as elegant, but much more subtle. It has every bit as much voicing as the Bridgtown, but not as much surface decoration. Each is available in 6 and 7 string configurations. Koll arch tops are usually made to order, so we can build for your unique situation, usually at no additional cost.
